When it comes to parental rights in Georgia, a man may be ordered to pay child support for a child even though the State does not legally recognize him as the child’s father and he may not even be allowed to visit with the child.
If you are a man and had a child born out of wedlock the only way to establish your parental rights other than marrying the mother of the child is to file a petition seeking to legitimate your child.
In Georgia an order granting Legitimation legally establishes the father and child relationship. An Order of Legitimation is the only way that a father ordered to pay child support for a child born out of wedlock can petition the court to allow visitation and/or seek custody of the child.
